Mercedes von Deck, MD is an orthopaedic surgeon at the Cambridge Health Alliance in Cambridge, MA.  She obtained her medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed her orthopaedic residency at Tufts/New England Medical Center.

Dr. von Deck treats a variety of musculoskeletal disorders, both surgical and non-surgical.  In her clinic she sees people with arthritis, broken bones, knee and shoulder injuries, back conditions and hand disorders.  Her surgical practice includes joint replacement, repair of fractures, knee, shoulder and ankle arthroscopy, and hand procedures.

Patients should be empowered with knowledge about how their bodies work and about their ailments or disorders so that they can learn to take care of themselves and can be partners in medical decision making.  Dr. von Deck spend a lot of time educating her patients, not only about proposed treatments, but also about self-care and prevention. Patients in Western society have come to rely heavily on the medical system to “cure” them.

Through treating patients as an orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. von Deck quickly realized that health is as much about a patient’s attitude and resiliency as it is the result of medication or surgical intervention.  She has explored the unity of body and mind for many years and finds that yoga and the Feldenkrais Method help create a concrete experience of how to change one’s function, health and wellness. She hopes to combine all her knowledge and skills to help others find better health and a better way to be in the world.
